Challenge

The challenge centered on developing custom structural packaging for five distinct products within an established brand. While Milwaukee Tool maintains strong brand recognition through its signature red color and bold wordmark, its existing packaging follows a conventional approach shared by many competitors, leaving limited room for creative expression. The opportunity was to identify areas within the existing visual identity, particularly the recognizable lightning bolt, that could be further explored to create a more distinctive and engaging packaging system.

Research + Process

Research began with in-person visits to major home improvement and hardware retailers to examine how existing tool packaging was constructed, displayed, and positioned alongside competing brands. This allowed me to identify common industry conventions and opportunities for greater visual distinction. My design approach focused on exploring the potential of Milwaukee's famous lightning bolt logo and the rigid structure of its typography, incorporating blueprint-inspired elements to introduce a more technical visual language. I developed an X-ray-like effect through layered imagery, creating a sense of depth and dimensionality while bringing greater visual engagement and attention to detail to an industry where packaging often receives little creative consideration.

Takeaway

Developing custom packaging dielines for five distinct products strengthened my understanding of structural design, product thinking, and the relationship between two-dimensional layouts and three-dimensional forms. The project expanded my skills in sketching, dieline engineering, and preparing designs for print and production, while demonstrating how a cohesive visual system can remain consistent across multiple products, structures, and applications.
